WALKS & BEACHES

FROM BRACING COASTAL WALKS AND SEASIDE STROLLS, TO MUDDY RIVERSIDE RAMBLES AND LONG FOREST TRAILS…

Suffolk has all the walks and beaches you could ask for. Here are some of our favourites for you to choose from…

Beaches

SOUTHWOLD

Dune-backed sandy, dog-friendly beaches sit to the South, with the busier brightly coloured beach huts and traditional seaside fun on the pier to the North.

Aldeburgh

A long pebble beach backed with pastel-coloured Victorian houses, fishing huts and boats, and fish and chips that are always worth the queue - the seaside town of Aldeburgh is a must visit.

Covehithe

Walk through fields and clamber down sand dunes to this unspoilt sandy bay backed with smooth sculpture-like driftwood and full of sea glass “treasure”. A true coastal beauty, only accessible by foot.

Shingle Street

An isolated shingle beach backed with a single line of bungalows and cottages. Find peace and quiet year-round, swim in the sheltered lagoon, or add to the whelk shell line, added in recent years as a powerful symbol of friendship.

Walberswick

Wilder than neighbouring Southwold and home to a stone and sand beach - Walberswick nature reserve is to the South and a harbour that's the perfect spot for crabbing is just a short walk from the beach.

Walks

ORFORD

RIVER WALL & MARSHES

Cross the road outside The Dunns and walk between the red brick farm buildings to the path that leads through the marshes and up to the river wall. You can head left towards the quay and then in a loop back through the village. Or right and around to Chantry Point and back through Gedgrave Marshes.

Depending on your route 1 miles to 4 miles. Flat paths and tracks that can be muddy. And some sections on public roads.

ALDEBURGH TO THORPENESS

Head past The Scallop North along the beachfront path. Across the tops of grassy sand dunes and past the beachfront houses at Thorpeness. Take the boardwalk path through the houses to the boating mere, vintage shop, and a well-earned bite to eat at The Kitchen (the cheese straws are a must).

5 miles. Flat beach paths and shingle on the beach.

Rendlesham Forest

Enjoy long walks amongst towering trees. Follow the infamous UFO trail or take your bike to cycle the various routes through the forest. Walking routes are accessible to all, parking is at the forest centre car park.

Easy access trial is 0.7miles and follows a circular path. The easy-going trail is 3miles in full but can be adapted easily to be shorter if needed.

Dunwich

Dunwich offers a mix of coastal, heathland and woodland walking. Head across the heather-covered clifftops to the village of Dunwich, and the remains of the city lost to the sea.

1.5 miles. Flat accessible paths, woodland and heathland trails and some walking on public roads. Or take the 5 mile circular walk to nearby Westleton and enjoy a pub at either end of the route!

Woodbridge

Walk along the River Deben, from the marina full of boats, along the river path through to Kyson Point, or further to the pretty village of Waldringfield. Spot wading birds on the mudflats at low tide. And take in views of the riverside town and Tide Mill.

1-3miles depending on route taken. Flat river and woodland paths that can be muddy in places.

Captain’s Wood

An ancient woodland, carpeted with bluebells in the spring and full of wildlife year- round. There is a small free car park just a short distance from the entrance to this Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve.

3-mile circular trial through woodland. Flat but can be damp and rough in places.

Snape to Iken

Leave the iconic Maltings buildings behind and follow the footpath through farmland, reed beds, and over raised boardwalks towards the picnic area at Iken cliffs. The gentle waters at Iken are ideal for paddleboarding and canoeing. Or you can take the riverside footpath further towards Iken Church in the distance for excellent views of the river and wildlife.

4 miles. Flat paths and boardwalks. The saltmarsh section of the walk at Iken can flood at high tide. And the riverside footpath beyond the picnic site can get very muddy in winter.
